Complete Guide to Crosshead Two-Stroke Marine Diesel Engines

Designed for marine engineers and cadets – covers design, construction, maintenance and electronically controlled engine systems with practical clarity.

Marine Low Speed Diesel Engines provides a comprehensive study of crosshead type two-stroke diesel engines – the mainstay of propulsion for large merchant vessels. The book explains the fundamentals of design, construction, operation, and control systems, supported throughout by detailed technical drawings and practical examples from contemporary engine models.

Covering essential topics such as engine monitoring, electronically controlled engines, maintenance practices, and emission regulations, this guide is ideal for those preparing for certificates of competency and practising marine engineers alike. It offers insight into engine selection, installation and modern performance standards while addressing the distinctions between legacy and current engine types in use across the industry.

This updated MEP title focuses only on engine designs that have remained in production over the last 20 years, offering current relevance to today’s seagoing professionals.

About the Author

Dr Denis Griffiths, BEng (Hons), MSc, PhD, CEng, FIMarEST, was a seagoing engineering officer before turning to teaching. As a Senior Lecturer at Liverpool John Moores University, he developed and delivered numerous marine engineering courses focused on propulsion. He has served on the IMarEST Council and is a member of the Institute’s Technical Committee.

IMarEST (The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology) is the first institute to bring together marine engineers, scientists and technologists into one international, multidisciplinary professional body. Founded in 1889, IMarEST is also supported by the Guild of Benevolence, a charity providing financial support to members of the marine community.
