Bunkside Reading

Books for reading rather than reference, for off-watch hours, a wet afternoon at anchor or a present for someone who sails.

The largest part of the collection is sailing memoirs and biographies: single-handed circumnavigators and round-the-world racers, cruising couples, yachting disasters and survival stories, and the lives of naval officers, explorers and seafaring women. Alongside them are voyage narratives and travel writing, from ocean crossings and coastal passages to barging round Britain and life on the inland waterways.

For lighter reading there are collections of sailing, fishing and diving stories, books on the Shipping Forecast and sea folklore, and humour from life afloat. The fiction ranges from classic sea novels to crime and thrillers set on the coast. There are also photography and art books on harbours, fishing fleets, coastlines and ships.
