Understanding weather is a core part of seamanship, whether you are planning a weekend passage or an ocean crossing. This collection covers marine meteorology from the basics of reading a synoptic chart to interpreting cloud formations, understanding wind patterns and using weather forecasts for passage planning.

Dedicated weather titles sit alongside broader seamanship books that cover meteorology as part of their syllabus. If you are studying for an RYA qualification, weather will feature in your theory exam from Day Skipper level upwards, and several of the books here are written with that in mind. The Reeds Weather Handbook and Reeds Cloud Handbook are good pocket-sized starting points.
