Complete Cargowork Guide for Deck Officer Certification
Cargo Notes – Second Edition offers a clear and usable guide to the cargo syllabus for Deck Officers and OOW certification. It condenses key material from weighty legislative texts and official publications into a practical, exam-focused reference that also serves well onboard.
Split into three sections, the book covers dry cargoes, liquid and gas cargoes, and cargo watchkeeping duties. Within each section, the basic concepts behind safe carriage are first introduced and then developed through operational overviews, summarised legislation and codes, and coverage of specific cargo types including bulk carriers, RoRos, reefers, containers, tankers, and gas carriers.
As noted in the foreword by Richard Speight (Glasgow College of Nautical Studies), this book brings together a wealth of factual information from respected sources such as the IMO, MCA, and industry codes. Its logical structure and clarity make it especially useful for those preparing for written and oral CoC exams, as well as for cargo watchkeeping officers and onboard use.
Table of Contents
- Section One – Dry Cargoes: Planning, documentation, stowage, ventilation, cargo gear, securing, and operational guidance for containers, Ro-Ros, reefers, and various bulk cargoes including grain, coal and steel.
- Section Two – Liquid and Gas Cargoes: Key systems and procedures for oil, chemical and gas tankers – covering hazards, instruments, inert gas systems, MARPOL compliance, ship-shore safety, and cargo operations.
- Section Three – Cargo Watchkeeping: Watchkeeping duties in port, safety protocols, permit systems, and enclosed space entry.
- Annexes: Definitions, extracts from legislation including COSWP, STCW ’95 and Load Line Zones.
