Cargo Notes – Second Edition offers a clear and usable guide to the cargo syllabus for Deck Officers and OOW certification. It condenses key material from weighty legislative texts and official publications into a practical, exam-focused reference that also serves well onboard.

Split into three sections, the book covers dry cargoes, liquid and gas cargoes, and cargo watchkeeping duties. Within each section, the basic concepts behind safe carriage are first introduced and then developed through operational overviews, summarised legislation and codes, and coverage of specific cargo types including bulk carriers, RoRos, reefers, containers, tankers, and gas carriers.

As noted in the foreword by Richard Speight (Glasgow College of Nautical Studies), this book brings together a wealth of factual information from respected sources such as the IMO, MCA, and industry codes. Its logical structure and clarity make it especially useful for those preparing for written and oral CoC exams, as well as for cargo watchkeeping officers and onboard use.

About the Author

Dhananjay Swadi has over 12 years’ sea-going experience on a range of vessel types including container ships, gas tankers and bulk carriers, culminating in service as Chief Officer with Maersk. He holds a Master’s certificate and a Master’s degree in Marine Policy with distinction from Cardiff University. Formerly a lecturer at Glasgow College of Nautical Studies, he now works as Manning Manager at Northern Marine Management, and has taught subjects including Cargowork, Marine Law and Maritime Economics.
