The Captain, The Daughter and The Spy

The true story of Titanic's captain and his family, told through private letters, newspapers and photographs.

Titanic Legacy: The Captain, The Daughter and The Spy is the untold story of Titanic’s legendary Captain E.J. Smith, his only daughter, and a web of intrigue that spans tragedy, espionage, and resilience.

On 3 July 1930, a maid discovered the dead body of her employer, 37-year-old Sidney Russell Cooke, in an upmarket apartment in Temple, London. He had been mysteriously shot through the stomach with a hunting rifle. Cooke was the husband of Titanic Captain Edward Smith’s only daughter, Helen—known to friends as ‘Mel’. Unknown to many, he was also an MI5 spy, described as a ‘prototype James Bond’ and the lover of esteemed Cambridge economist John Maynard Keynes.

Drawing from never-before-published private letters, family photographs, and archival documents, this book pieces together the true story of a legendary captain, the mysterious death of a British spy, and an inspirational woman who stepped out of the shadow of misfortune to carve her own path. By the age of 49, Mel had lost her father, mother, husband, son, and daughter—all in unusual circumstances. Yet, she became a pilot, a driver of fast cars, an artist’s muse, and a collector of fine art, living among suffragettes, politicians, Russian spies, yachtsmen, and the fabulously wealthy.
