About the Photographer
Rick Tomlinson made his name photographing the Southern Ocean as a crew member in the Whitbread Round the World Race. Born in 1958, he grew up on the Isle of Man racing dinghies, and took up photography while boatbuilding and sailing with his friend Nick Keig.
In 1983 he joined the build team of the Whitbread maxi Colt Cars, which became Simon Le Bon’s Drum. He sailed aboard her in the 1985 Whitbread with one Nikon and 20 rolls of film, and his slow-exposure night shots of the Southern Ocean redefined onboard photography. He went on to sail four Whitbreads, aboard Drum, The Card, Intrum Justitia and with the two EF teams in 1997, when he was commissioned by National Geographic.
He was official photographer for the Volvo Ocean Race in 2001-02 and 2008-09, and has worked with the GBR Challenge at the America’s Cup and Team SCA, as well as for many of the world’s leading production and superyacht builders. His expedition work has taken him to the Arctic and Antarctic, Svalbard, the Falklands and South Georgia, including coaching wildlife photography aboard Skip Novak’s Pelagic Australis and Vinson of Antarctica.
In 1992 he and Nick Keig were awarded the RNLI Bronze Medal for saving the lives of two fishermen off Northern Ireland. He received the Volvo/Inmarsat Pioneer of Media award in 2012, was voted the Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image of the Year people’s choice in 2013 and 2015, and in 2025 was inducted into the Cape Horn Hall of Fame.
