Walk the Lost Rivers Beneath London’s Streets

This illustrated guide follows London’s buried rivers on foot – revealing hidden histories, landmarks and landscapes shaped by forgotten waterways.

London’s Hidden Rivers is a fascinating walking guide to the subterranean waterways that helped shape the capital. From the River Fleet beneath Farringdon to the Tyburn under Baker Street station, David Fathers traces the long-buried rivers of London through beautifully illustrated walks that combine history, local landmarks and hidden geography.

Each walk begins at the nearest tube or rail station to a river’s source and follows its underground path through parkland, historic neighbourhoods and remnants of the city’s industrial past. Along the way, discover where a young Mozart once played, where Canterbury pilgrims paused to rest, and where David Bowie rehearsed. Whether on the north or south of the Thames, each route reveals the watery veins beneath the city’s surface.

Featuring more than 120km of guided walks, this book is a must for Londoners and visitors alike who want to see the capital from an entirely new perspective.

Praise for London’s Hidden Rivers

"So many of London’s rivers have been concreted over and made into sewers. Fathers presents walking routes along hidden rivers… you could start at Hampstead Heath, following the River Fleet all the way to Blackfriars, being entertained and beguiled by him as you go."
Feargal Sharkey, Walk

"Fathers has a mighty talent for combining London trivia with delightful illustrations… This book completes an aquatic trilogy that is so accomplished, we half expect to see a cover endorsement from Old Father Thames himself."
