Traditional Ropework from the Master of Knots
Step-by-step projects from Des Pawson – ropeworker, museum founder and MBE – blending utility, tradition and craft in one irresistible volume.
Des Pawson's Knot Craft: 35 Ropework Projects is a treasure trove of the author's personal ropecraft recipes, featuring step-by-step projects ranging from bellropes, key fobs and fenders to mats, doorstops, knife lanyards and belts. Now expanded in its second edition, this book is as instructive as it is inspiring.
With a wealth of background detail and historical insight, Des provides all the ingredients you’d expect from a ropework recipe book: precise instructions, material specifications, and suggestions for creative variations. Whether ashore or afloat, readers will find both guidance and encouragement to begin crafting beautiful and practical objects from rope.
As Des says, this is “the book that makes all other knot books work”.
About the Author
Des Pawson has a worldwide reputation as a rope worker, teaching and demonstrating his skills at boat shows, festivals, museums and galleries at home and abroad. In 1982 he co-founded the International Guild of Knot Tyers, and in 1996 he opened The Museum of Knots and Sailors' Ropework. In 2007 he was awarded an MBE for his services to the knot and rope industry.
Praise for Des Pawson's Knot Craft
“You'll certainly never look at a frayed off-cut of rope in quite the same way again.”
– Classic Boat
“A gem of a book.”
– Canal Boat and Inland Waterways
“Knots are one of the currencies of wisdom, and there's nothing more impressive... Knot Craft is a gem.”
– sailers.co.uk (December 2009)
“Most knot enthusiasts aboard smacks and barges sneakily keep one of Des's books in their bunk... but owners of modern yachts will also warm to the knotty problems unlaced by Des, with useful and innovative applications of ropework.”
– Yachting Monthly (March 2010)
“This shows the author as the quintessential English eccentric. Described as the ‘guru of knot tying’, he is certainly different and this is what gives this book its abundant charm... An amazingly eclectic collection of useful, useless and often very attractive examples of ropework is clearly described.”
– Ausmarine Book Review (May 2011)
