Paul Heiney wrote about the sea with the precision of a journalist and the hard-won experience of an offshore sailor. His memoir One Wild Song recounts a solo voyage to Cape Horn made in memory of his son Nicholas. Farewell Mr Puffin describes a voyage to the remote island of St Kilda. Ocean Sailing is a practical hardback on offshore seamanship for ambitious cruisers.

His final major work, the Cruising Guide to Cape Horn and Antarctic Waters, published by Imray, covers Chile, the Beagle Channel, the Falkland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula in detail. The second edition was published in 2026.
