The Navigator’s Core Reference
Norie’s Nautical Tables is the essential requirement for anyone learning and practising astronavigation.
Since J. W. Norie published the first edition of his Complete Set of Nautical Tables and Epitome of Practical Navigation in 1803, the content and presentation have evolved continuously to reflect advances in navigation. New tables have been added and obsolete ones removed, always with the aim of improving accuracy and reducing the tedium of calculation.
With the widespread adoption of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), many navigators now rely on electronic positioning. However, because equipment or systems can fail, no prudent seafarer undertakes an ocean passage without a dependable navigational back-up. Norie’s Nautical Tables provides that security, offering the means to calculate a vessel’s position, course, and speed by traditional methods.
The explanations include detailed, step-by-step worked examples showing how to perform navigational calculations using either a scientific calculator or the tables themselves. This edition incorporates contributions from François Hugo and an updated ‘Seaports of the World’ section, presenting formulae in formats suitable for direct calculator input while retaining logarithms for manual computation.
- All the tables required for coastal and deep-sea navigation are included.
 - A simple, uniform method of interpolation for all trigonometric tables is used.
 - Includes additional tables and data not readily available on board ship or primarily used in examination settings.
