Divider and Compass in One
7-inch geared dividers with interchangeable point and lead
7-inch (17.8 cm) dividers and compass in coated marine alloy and plastic, light and corrosion-resistant, with hardened stainless steel points. A centre gear sets the opening quickly and precisely with one hand, and either point can be swapped for a pencil lead to turn the dividers into a compass. A spare point, knob and lead are included, and spare leads come in packs of 15. Made in Germany, with a limited lifetime warranty.
Measuring distance on a chart
Open the dividers between the two points, then lay them against the latitude scale at the side of the chart, level with where you are working. One minute of latitude is one nautical mile. Never use the longitude scale along the top and bottom: it shrinks away from the equator. For a long passage, set the dividers to a round figure, say five miles, and step them along the track.
