From GPS to Paper Chart

15½-inch plotter for marking a lat and long on the chart

A 15½-inch (39.4 cm) plotter for putting a latitude and longitude from the GPS onto a paper chart, and reading a position off one. Clear acrylic with stainless steel and brass fittings, non-slip pads, and pencil guide holes to mark the position. One size works on any chart.

It also lays off bearings like a parallel rule, against a compass rose or its own Captain Field protractor scale. Anti-slip pads underneath grip when you press the handle and let it slide when you let go. It comes in a protective sleeve with the instructions printed on it, with a limited lifetime warranty.

How to use the GPS Plotter

Lay the plotter against the latitude scale at the side of the chart, with a pair of holes on the latitude from the GPS and its foot over the longitude scale. Open it to the longitude and mark a short line through the hole. Then hold the left-hand side down, put a pencil in the hole and open the plotter further: the pencil draws the latitude across your mark, and that is the fix. Using the longitude scales at the top and bottom of the chart, one size covers the whole chart.

To read the position of a waypoint, line up an edge and a hole with it, square the plotter on a grid line and read the longitude, then walk it to the side of the chart and read the latitude.
