North Brittany and the Channel Islands
Pilotage, colour charts and aerial photographs of ports, harbours and anchorages, with where to eat and what to do ashore.
A cruising companion to the north coast of Brittany, the Channel Islands and the harbours on the west side of the Cherbourg peninsula. It combines pilotage and nautical information with suggestions of where to eat and what to do ashore.
It is illustrated with colour charts and photographs, including aerial photographs of ports, harbours and anchorages. This edition updates the earlier companion.
Praise for North Brittany & Channel Islands Cruising Companion
“This book contains all that a good pilot should... but it is the style of the book that sets it apart. Reading it feels like having a conversation with an old friend during which he reminisces about places he has been or sailed to.”
– Royal Cruising Club
“A sailing book that epitomises the best qualities of a cruising companion. It's thorough, well-informed, full of good suggestions and possesses the invaluable quality of intensifying enjoyment without bossily directing it… It's an absolutely desirable purchase and memorial to a cruising lifetime well spent.”
– Yachting Monthly
“This cruising companion has re-invigorated my appetite to explore in more detail and at a leisurely pace the offerings of this unique cruising ground.”
– Moody Owners' Association
“A must-have for yachtsmen cruising these waters.”
– Julian Stockwin
“A book that one could read for pleasure as well as information. The text is enhanced by the excellent quality of the photographs and there is a good balance between navigational information, domestic needs for longer-term cruising and tourist information.”
– Cruising Association
“Peter's enthusiasm for the sailing area pours out of every page – he does not just tell you about a port but gives you a feel for it.”
– Channel Islands Guide
About the authors
Jane Cumberlidge first sailed while at university, on a trip to Copenhagen in her sister and brother-in-law's converted 1920s lifeboat. She and her husband Peter cruised widely under sail and power, returning often to Brittany and the Channel Islands.
Peter Cumberlidge was a cruising and travel writer and the author of several books on pilotage and seamanship. For nearly forty years he wrote for most of the UK yachting magazines. His own boat was Stormalong, a gaff cutter designed by William Kelly and built as a yacht in 1936 at Gostelow's yard in Boston, which he bought in 1972.
About Fernhurst Books
Fernhurst Books was founded in 1979, first publishing books on dinghy racing and later on cruising and other watersports. Sold to John Wiley in 2006, the list was bought back in 2013 by a group of sailing enthusiasts including the original founder, and it is again an independent nautical publisher.
