A Full-Size Sextant
German-made drum sextant with a 4x40 telescope
A full-size marine sextant from Freiberger in Germany, with a light-alloy frame, a hardwood handle and a micrometer drum. The arc has a radius of 170 mm and reads from −5° to +125°; the drum is graduated in minutes and read by estimation to 0.1′. The standard telescope is 4x40.
Four index shades and three horizon shades swing in on metal frames. The index mirror is 57 x 42 mm and the horizon mirror 57 mm across, split or full view (choose above). The index arm runs between the frame and the handle, out of the spray. The sextant measures 26 x 24 x 13 cm and weighs about 1.4 kg; it comes in a wooden case (about 4 kg packed), with an adjusting key, a user's guide and a test certificate of its corrections.
Split or full-view mirror
A full-view horizon mirror shows the horizon across the whole glass, which makes it easier to bring a body down to the horizon on a moving deck, and most people learning find it easier. A split mirror gives a brighter reflected image, which some navigators prefer for stars at twilight.
