Tackle the ISM Code
International Safety and Risk Management: Orals Prep Series 2 focuses on the ISM Code and its application aboard merchant navy ships and superyachts. Designed as a Q&A-based study guide, it helps deck and technical officers prepare for their STCW oral examinations through repeated self-testing and clear topic breakdowns.
The book covers definitions, roles and responsibilities, statutory certificates and records, audit procedures, non-conformities, hazards, risk assessments and permits to work. These topics form a core part of the STCW requirements for monitoring shipboard safety and regulatory compliance under A/II and A/III competencies.
Part of the Orals Prep Series, this volume builds on the foundation set by Series 1 and continues to support officers in delivering structured, confident answers during their oral assessments.
About the Author
Gerard Pollock’s seagoing career began in 1998 as a cadet with the Conway Merchant Navy Trust, later joining BP and sailing on VLCC, LNG, coastal, and DP shuttle tankers. He went on to work on large superyachts during the implementation of the ISM Code and has also served on passenger ships, including the QE2 and Wind Surf.
After commanding a high-profile newbuild yacht, Gerard moved ashore in 2017 as a Flag/Port State Control Inspector for New Zealand’s maritime regulator. He is an ISM Auditor and PSC trainer, having led Tokyo MOU training seminars and advised Pacific Island nations on maritime safety. He now runs a UK-based maritime compliance and training consultancy working with superyachts and commercial operators.
