Two Decades of Change on the Mersey

Explores how the River Mersey’s shipping has evolved since 2000—through new trades, cruise terminals, and the changing design of ships and docks.

Mersey Shipping Since 2000 charts how the River Mersey and its docks have adapted to the demands of modern trade. The creation of the Mersey Docks & Harbour Board in 1858 and its transition to a limited company in 1972 laid the groundwork for continuous investment in Liverpool and Birkenhead’s maritime infrastructure. By the turn of the century, the port was undergoing a new phase of transformation.

As cargo carriage shifted to containers, new facilities were developed for the grain and timber trades, a steel terminal opened, and the scrap-metal industry took over many of the older berths. Roll-on/roll-off traffic to Ireland surged, and the opening of a cruise terminal in 2008 allowed the largest passenger ships to visit the city. Today, the Mersey welcomes vessels of every kind—from tankers and bulk carriers to tugs and cruise liners.

Through a fascinating selection of 160 images, Ian Collard captures the port’s evolution over the past two decades, documenting the decline of traditional trades, the rise of new industries, and the ships specially designed to meet global demands.
