A thorough pilot for the full Red Sea route to Suez
In the meticulously revised third edition of this comprehensive guide, authors Elaine Morgan and Stephen Davies build upon the foundations that have made Red Sea Pilot a classic title.
Complemented by inspirational photography and new Imray plans, this guide paints a detailed portrait of the entire expanse of the Red Sea, from Aden to Suez and its canal.
The leaps in sailing technology since the previous edition in the early 2000s are evident in this upgraded book. With advancements in satellite imagery, the book includes far more precise depictions of remote coastlines, harbours and havens. Additionally, a dedicated section provides invaluable recommendations on readying your vessel for the unique conditions of the Red Sea. The result is a third edition that stands out not only for its rich content but also for its user-friendly approach – emphasising safety, preparation and a sense of wonder for every cruiser in this fascinating cruising ground.
About the Authors
Stephen Davies served in the Royal Navy and Royal Marines before becoming a lecturer at the University of Hong Kong. Elaine Morgan worked there as a librarian, and the two went on to launch writing careers focused on sailing and cruising.
Years of racing to the Philippines from Hong Kong led to a 50,000-mile cruise that took them through Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific before heading for Europe. That extended voyage inspired the Red Sea Pilot and two volumes of the Cruising Guide to South East Asia, all published by Imray.
They later returned to Asia by sailing back down the Red Sea to Singapore. Stephen became the first director of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum, while Elaine worked as an editor for a youth services organisation. Now based by the River Dee in Chester – on the former site of the city’s last shipyard – they remain active in maritime writing. Stephen is currently working on his fifth book about 19th-century maritime Asia.
