For Large Charts

24-inch acrylic parallel rule with chrome arms

A 24-inch (61 cm) parallel rule for plotting courses and transferring bearings on the chart. The longest of the range, for large charts and the wide chart tables of ships, and the size many Merchant Navy and superyacht students use for college and SQA chartwork exams.

Milled acrylic with bevelled edges, rigid chrome arms and handles, and non-slip cork feet, with a protractor scale (Captain Field pattern) along the edge for taking a bearing from any meridian when there is no compass rose nearby. It comes in a protective plastic sleeve, with a limited lifetime warranty.

How to use a parallel rule

Lay one edge along the course or bearing, hold it down, and move the other edge across the chart; then hold that edge and bring up the first. Walked like this, the rule carries the line to a compass rose or a position without losing its direction.
