More than just a harbour guide, it provides a reassuring hand on the shoulder for English Channel navigation from acclaimed broadcaster, author and Yachtmaster Examiner Tom Cunliffe's personal experience of more than 40 years running the tides and finding the eddies.

Working with harbourmasters and a dedicated group of carefully selected yachtsmen and women, Cunliffe has kept this pilot as up to date as is possible. Each section is prefaced by comprehensive passage notes combined with advice about navigation, regulations and paperwork on both sides of the water. Best of all are the pilotage notes, the plans, the aerial and approach shots for harbours great and obscure, plus the author's frank remarks about shoreside facilities. The net result is unique – rigorous navigation advice to pilot you safely through the rocks, combined with a light touch that makes it a thoroughly enjoyable read.

The Pilot has a long and illustrious history, with the first edition published in the 1930s. Following the pioneering work of the legendary Adlard Coles, the book was passed to Captain John Coote RN in 1982. It has been under the Imray imprint since the early 1990s.

About the Author

Broadcaster, author and Yachtmaster Examiner Tom Cunliffe is one of Britain's leading sailing writers. He's been working with Imray as compiler of The Shell Channel Pilot for more than 30 years.

A worldwide authority on cruising sailing and an expert on traditional sailing craft, he learnt his skills during numerous ocean passages, often in low-fi boats without engines or electronics, voyaging from Brazil to Greenland and from the Caribbean to Russia.

He's owned a series of traditional gaff-rigged vessels that have taken him and his family on countless adventures, but he now sails a classic 44-foot cutter which he keeps in Denmark. Tom has been a Yachtmaster Examiner since 1978 and generously shares his knowledge and tales of the sea through his well-followed YouTube channel, at events and through writing and broadcast media. He has monthly columns in Sailing Today, Classic Boat, Yachting World and Sail (US) magazines. He wrote and presented the BBC TV series The Boats That Built Britain.
