Set Them with One Hand
8-inch bow-pattern brass dividers with a cloth pouch
8-inch (20.3 cm) single-handed dividers, brass throughout, points included: the bow pattern most navigators use for measuring distance on a chart.
Squeeze the bow to open the legs and squeeze the legs to close them, so one hand sets the dividers while the other holds the chart or the parallel rule. The stiffness can be adjusted with the screw at the top. They come with a black cloth pouch.
Measuring distance on a chart
Open the dividers between the two points, then lay them against the latitude scale at the side of the chart, level with where you are working. One minute of latitude is one nautical mile. Never use the longitude scale along the top and bottom: it shrinks away from the equator. For a long passage, set the dividers to a round figure, say five miles, and step them along the track.
An occasional polish with a soft cloth keeps the brass bright.
