Arcs and Ranges on the Chart
8-inch brass pencil compass with a Staedtler 2B pencil and pouch
An 8-inch (20.3 cm) brass pencil compass with a stainless steel point, for chartwork: drawing arcs of distance from a light, a headland or a danger, range rings, and circles of position.
It comes with a Staedtler 2B pencil, held in a two-step clamp so it stays put while you draw, and a black cloth pouch to keep it in. The stiffness can be adjusted with the screw at the top.
Using a pencil compass
Open the compass against the latitude scale at the side of the chart, level with where you are working, to the distance you need: one minute of latitude is one nautical mile. Put the point on the position and draw the arc. A 2B lead rubs out cleanly, so the chart is ready for the next passage.
An occasional polish with a soft cloth keeps the brass bright.
