Courses Without a Compass Rose

Breton-type plotter with a rotating compass rose

A 15 x 5-inch (38.1 x 12.7 cm) acrylic plotter of the Breton or Portland type, Weems & Plath's version of the plotter taught on RYA courses, with a rotating compass rose and grid in the centre.

The edges are graduated in nautical miles at 1:20,000, 1:40,000 and 1:80,000. It comes with a pencil and a sharpener, with a limited lifetime warranty.

How to use it

To lay off a course, set the rose to the course, put the edge through your position and turn the whole plotter until the grid lines up with a meridian or parallel on the chart, then draw along the edge. To read a course, lay the edge along the line, turn the rose until its grid lines up with the chart, and read the course off the rose. The same plotter measures distance on charts at its scales, and plots or reads a position by its latitude and longitude.
