A Rolling Rule for Small Tables

8.2-inch rolling plotter with distance scales and a protractor

An 8.2-inch (20.8 cm) rolling plotter for plotting courses and carrying lines across the chart where there is no room to walk a parallel rule. The acrylic edge rides on a marine aluminium roller assembly, and the two rollers keep it parallel as it moves.

It has distance scales at 1:20,000 and 1:40,000, an inch scale and a semicircular protractor. It comes in a plastic sleeve with instructions on the back, with a limited lifetime warranty. The full-size version is the 12½-inch Parallel Plotter.

How to use a parallel plotter

Lay the edge along the course or bearing and roll the plotter across the chart to where you need the line. Use the protractor against a meridian to read or lay off a bearing without a compass rose.
