The Traditional Pattern
8-inch straight brass dividers with steel tips
8-inch (20.3 cm) straight dividers in brass, with polished stainless steel tips and hand-sharpened points, for measuring distance on a chart. The tension is set with the screw at the hinge, using a flat-head screwdriver. Lifetime warranty.
Measuring distance on a chart
Open the dividers between the two points, then lay them against the latitude scale at the side of the chart, level with where you are working. One minute of latitude is one nautical mile. Never use the longitude scale along the top and bottom: it shrinks away from the equator. For a long passage, set the dividers to a round figure, say five miles, and step them along the track.
