Set Them with One Hand

7-inch brass one-hand dividers with steel points

7-inch (17.8 cm) one-hand dividers in brass with stainless steel points, for measuring distance on a chart. The bow pattern opens and closes with one hand, so the other stays on the chart or the parallel rule. Lifetime warranty.

Measuring distance on a chart

Open the dividers between the two points, then lay them against the latitude scale at the side of the chart, level with where you are working. One minute of latitude is one nautical mile. Never use the longitude scale along the top and bottom: it shrinks away from the equator. For a long passage, set the dividers to a round figure, say five miles, and step them along the track.
