The novel follows sailing skipper and amateur detective Cass Lynch as she investigates the disappearance of a visiting yachting couple from Brae, Shetland's oil capital. Collaborating with DI Gavin Macrae, Cass uncovers connections to international art theft. Despite warnings to stay away, the situation becomes personal when one of her sailing pupils vanishes, leading her to a remote Neolithic tomb where secrets await.
